I cannot restart my phone by the usual methods. Now what?

I've tried holding the sleep/wake button down. I've tried holding the sleep/week button AND the home button down at the same time for over 10 seconds. All I get is the icon indicating the battery is dead. I do not get the Apple sign. What can I try next?

Have you tried charging your device? Have you attempted to plug your phone into the computer?
