Why does my iPhone 6 keep downloading old deleted emails?

iphone 6 started reloading old deleted emails this morning - up to 487! As I delete, it keeps reloading.

Login to your email account via a computer, and then mass delete the emails. The results should sync to your iPhone 6.

You might also as indicated above by Just Me while you are there see if there is a setting that allows the deleted email to delete right away just like downloading email and choose to have them off the server right away - Just an example.
