How can I get my iMessages on both my iPhone and my iPad Mini?

I just got a new iPad mini 16gb wifi and am loving it! One thing I can't figure out is how to get my iMessages on both my Iphone and the mini. Right now my mini stays at home and if my girlfriend messages my iPad I won't know about it til I get home. Is there a way to get the message on both devices?

Use the same Apple ID account on both devices. You will receive iMessages on both devices instantaneously.

I do have the same ID and it still doesn't send to both devices.

Do you have the Send & Receive settings configured properly?

Probably not, if I did I would probably be getting messages on both

On your iPad, Go to settings > messages > send & receive & make sure you select your Apple ID & phone number. Make sure the settings match on your cell phone as well.
