Why isn't Gift Card an option for payment?

My credit card expired and I'm waiting for my new card to come I the mail. I don't have another card I can add to my Apple ID so I cannot update my apps or buy anything because iTunes "requires verification". There isn't an option for gift cards, only credit cards. It's frustrating how difficult Apple makes things for their customers especially when we are trying to give them money.

If I already have a credit card linked to my iTunes ID but I want to use a gift card to update my apps & purchase music can I remove the credit card off my account?

why isn't Gift Card an option for payment method

Open iTunes on your phone, scroll to the bottom of the featured section & click redeem. Enter your iTunes gift card info & your account will update.

From a Mac, open iTunes, click iTunes Store, go to quick links & select Redeem. Enter your Apple ID & password then enter your card info.
