    It happened suddenly while I was traveling. I do not have cellular service on his device.

    Well, there's really nothing for you to do except wait until you are in an area where you have internet access via Wi-Fi so it can continue to "upgrade", as you put it. Alternatively, you can reboot your device and restart the procedure later.
