When i airdrop a photo toan ipad, is the receiver notified, & where does it go?

My wife & Imeach have an iPad air. Bluetooths and wi-fi are on, we are within 15 feet, yet she seldom recieves the photo I send her. Her ipad shows up in the air drop circle after I click the share/send to icon, so what else needs to be done. Occasionally it works, usually not.

If it sends and you accept it will be stored in your camera roll assuming it's the same as the iphone
