    I have deleted e-mail messages for a long time and wondered if I should remove deleted mail but do not know how.

    Go to Mailboxes and select the account under ACCOUNTS. Then go to the Trash folder and select Edit in the upper-right corner. You will see an option in the bottom-right corner to Delete All.

    Just a suggestion, but you could configure your e-mail accounts to remove deleted mail after so much time.
