Why am I getting a "verification failed" error in regard to iCloud?

I keep getting the iCloud error 'Verification failed, there was an error connecting to iCloud. I can access my Apple ID but when I enter my password for iCloud which is the same as my Apple ID I keep getting an error message and cannot connect to iCloud. Please help!!
