Uploading 15,000 photos to iCloud via my Mac is slow. Anyone else experience this?

When I go to preferences in the new Photos program which replaces iPhoto, and choose "optimize my Mac storage" the pictures are very very slow to import into the cloud. I can only really have a functioning computer by constantly pausing this process. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Any answers?

Open Photos before bedtime and let it do it's thing all night... And subsequent nights until you're done...
