Why is my trash can grey?

I did a backup of my photo's to Iphoto and for some reason it put all of my old photos back on my phone (Iphone 5C) so I want to delete them off my phone but when I select the photos and try to put them in the trash, my trash can is grey and won't let me delete them.

Help!!

Were those photo originally synced from a computer and iTunes?

Yes, It did not fix it.

Yes. They were synced from my phone to iTune it did an auto sync

You will have to delete them with your computer in iTunes.
