    what does the half moon and a lock in a circle that appears on the top right hand side of the screen

    The half moon is Do Not Disturb and the lock in a circle is Portrait Orientation Lock.

    Do Not Disturb was a great addition to the iPhone. I no longer get unwanted calls or alerts at 3:00 am.
