Help! I'm currently shutting it off, but it takes an embarrassing and distracting and socially dampening amount of time to boot back up, and check missed calls, emails, & c.

The little switch by the volume buttons. If you want to turn off vibration, you'll have to go into settings.

The first thing that would have come to my mind would be to decrease the volume to the point where I couldn't hear any alert sounds, and then leave it in that position until the appropriate time for me to increase the volume again.

Or touch the "Do Not Disturb" icon in the Control Center.

But "it takes an embarrassing and distracting and socially dampening amount of time to boot back up." Seriously?

If you need the phone silent during certain periods of time just use Do Not Disturb feature set it and forget it .

Put the phone in airplane mode. I think that would do it.
