how to get songs on ipod wwen they are for mp3

there are songs that you can download on mp3 that I want but I have an ipod and even tho they did download some where I cant find. I was told that ipod and mp3 are the same.do I need some kind of converter.i normally get my tunes from I tunes but they don't have all the songs that I would like.
