Can I view ipad Iphotos half screen ?

I'm using an iPad Air. When I tap a photo in iPhoto, it expands to fill the screen. Is there a way to reduced the size it expands to? That is, I want to tap a thumbnail and see it half screen size rather than full screen size. Thanks.
