The map app was working fine until about a month ago, when the 'my location' showed up on the wrong spot. At first, it was only about a mile away, now it's hundreds.

The wifi hotspot you're connected to has an incorrect location recorded for it in the database iOS location services uses to fix an approximate location of your iPod. If you want an accurate location, you need an external GPS receiver for the iPod since it does not have one of its own.
