How to sync photos to iphone using itunes?

I was able to sync photos from my computer using my itunes. It makes its own folder. It seems if I want to do anything with them on the phone I have to transfer them within the phone to a new folder. I was not able to delete them or anything in the folder that was synced up from my computer. I had to cancel the sync then they went away. Is there a simpler way to do this? I'd kind of like to transfer folders then just delete the pics I don't want to be on the phone. Doing it any other way seems I'd have to make a whole new folder on computer for just the pics I want to sync, then let it transfer.
