    Could anyone help is it meant to be free message someone in Australia from Scotland over messenger on fb .i have not been charged anything but my boyfriend has a huge bill from his provider but I thought it was free x

    You won't have to open your wallet... But you're paying in that they can data mine your messages and target specific ads at you in Facebook and partner apps, websites... Carrier charges for things are not Facebook's...

    You have to pay for the data that your phone uses to send a fb message, on wifi it's free, if you have a unlimited data with your cellular company (T-Mobile) then you won't be charged extra. Your boyfriend was probably using the Internet (fb, apps, exchange mail, etc) and has to pay overages or made international phone calls.
