Deleted pictures still taking up storage space

I went through and selected groups of pictures & deleted thousands. They were taking up 8G! Yet, my phone still says Storage is full & will not let me take new photos. How do I free up the storage so I can use my phone again?

Have you also deleted them from the recently deleted photos album? After you delete a good amount of storage like that you should always restart your phone and let the memory reset. My memory was full, I deleted enough to get a 1.5GB free, after I reset my phone I had 4.5GB free.
