I have mac book pro 15 (late 2013), running 10.9.5, mini-display to DVI on Samsung U28D590D. Until a few days ago my 4K monitor was running smoothly, I believe the resolution was set at 1080p, but was "smart" enough to make it 4K (I prefer larger icons and fonts). I spent 2 hours with apple and 2 hours with samsung. Apple claims it is not supported and told me to take a hike. There has to be some way to get this back.
I did not backup my machine before upgrade (which now I wish I did). When you use 4K, can't go back to 1080p.
