Kid safe messaging

I'm looking for a kid safe messaging app that my 7 & 9 year old kids can use to keep in touch with their out of state cousins. My family is an Apple family and my brothers family is an Android family. Is there an app available for cross platforms that is safe for kids to use that would be similar to iMessage. Most of the kid messenger apps I found are only available on a single OS. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

With the "proper" monitoring of your kids activities, iMessage should be sufficient.

Thanks, I always use proper supervision with my kids texting and am an avid apple fan because of iMessages safety. My issue is that my brother loathes Apple so I need an app that can be used on both iOS and android. My kids use iPods/iPads so regular texting isn't an option.

There's also BBM. It's very secure and they can do groups.
