If I have Snow Leopard and Yosemite on separate partitions and then restart the computer, how does it know which OS I want to use?

What happened is this: Snow Leopard will not run this year's Turbo-tax so I need the newer OS system but I prefer Snow Leopard for most purposes. Not sure what problems I might be introducing if I download Yosemite onto a separate partition. I haven't needed to partition before.

No. He's wondering about two different OS X partitions.

I'm not sure which would start up by default.

Well I'm not sure if it would be different on Mac but when I installed Linux on my win 7 machine every time I restart my comp it would ask me what OS I would like to boot into.

I imagine you would get the option to choose on a Mac as wellbut I'm not 100% since I haven't installed another separate partition on my rMBP.

I ran my iMac like this for years. It will boot up with the last OS used. If you hold option while the computer is starting up you'll get a choice of which to use. After that it will boot in that OS or while in any OS go to system preferences startup disk click that and you can choose from there.
