i see a program I want, download it, it appears in Downloads.
Double clicking the 'package' does something. Installs ? But I can never find it again.
Two examples. Software for my Zyxel NAS and my Canon MP210 scanner driver.
Both download. Both open, and install I presume, both work so I can use them. But are not available again once I close them down. I then have to reinstall them again.
    Baffled.

Most mac programs comes as DMG (disc image) files. Sometimes those files are also zipped. So unzip if needed. Then double click on the DMG file. This should open another small window. If it doesn't, check Finder and you should see the DMG loaded in the left side bar. Select that. Inside the DMG file is the app itself. Double clicking the app from there doesn't install it usually. What you need to do is to drag the application to you Applications folder. Then run it from your Applications folder not from the DMG file. Then you can close the DMG file (eject it like an external hard drive) and it will remain installed.
