    I've rebooted and it still doesn't work. My housemate just told me it's happened to him on occasion as well. I've seen it mentioned on the web too. What's up with this bug and why hasn't apple addressed it in one of the constant updates I have to do?

    Marie, are you referring to OS X or iOS? If iOS, what iOS version are you running? With iOS 8.1.2, the Spotlight search on my device, worked perfectly 98% of the time, but since the 8.1.3 update, it has worked flawlessly. If you haven't updated to the latest iOS version, do so to see if the problem gets resolved.
