error occurred during activation try again in messages (ipad 4th gen)

I started getting "not delivered" status on messages I sent. People sending me a message received status of delivered, it was not.
But I am able to sent & received emails, use internet. So I don't have clue as to what is going on. I'm guessing a reset might work, but don't want to lose everything I have. My ipad was a gift to me, someone set it up for me,and I don't know it was saving to the cloud?
Any help or suggestions would really be appreciated

You can try a few things:

1. Sign out of iMessage and then sign back in.
2. Go to Settings - Messages and then toggle the button on next to "Send As SMS".
3. Go to Settings - General - Reset and then select "Reset Network Settings"
4. Contact your wireless carrier so that they can troubleshoot from their end.
5. Restore your device and set it up as new.
6. Make a Genius Bar appointment with the nearest Apple Store and have them diagnose the problem for you.
