Why am I getting an error when trying to backup specific files and folders?

I am trying to backup specific files in folders on an external hard drive that I back up to the Time machine. I have tried doing individual files and entire folders but each time I do, I get similar error messages saying...
"The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "Current Jobs" can't be read or written. (Error code -36).
Please advise,

Open the Disk Utility... First Aid... Verify disk... Repair disk... Same with permissions...
