Older photos in ipad instant message have converted to jpeg. How do I save them? I

In my iPad mini it groups photos together - newer photos may be selected and then saved. Older messages will not open but indicate they are in jpeg format. I want to save them - how?

Where do you see this? Should be if you have a message... and it has a picture in it... tap & hold briefly and a menu will pop up with options on what to do with it...
