Why don't I get automatic notification for incoming emails?

Recently I changed over from Blackberry to iPhone 4S. Although mails (my office mail, as well as rediffmail) are configured in my iPhone, I am not getting prompt notifications for my emails, unlike in Blackberry. I need to open the mail box, after which I get the update on emails. I was told that iPhone works with "push mail" concept similar to blackberry phone and I am disappointed to realise that it is actually "pull mail" concept! I don't know if I am ignorant of any specific setting that is required to get automatic mail notifications. Please advise.

most mail does push- Gmail however does not- If you are using gmail you may want to try the iOS app- that might push

Any mail server with push capability works exactly the same as on your old phone. Do you have push enabled?
