    Files have been formatted for Mac from my old windows machine where I used media centre to stream music and photos

    If the mini sees the drive and files, use iTunes to add them to your library - and leave them where they are on the portable HD, or copy them to the mini's iTunes library depending on your iTunes preferences set-up... the photos can be copied to the photos directory on your mini.
