I want to be able to use the latest iOS version on my iPhone 3g

I want to be able to use the latest iOS version on my iPhone 3G. I know very little about Jailbreaking (which I am also told is the terminology used to describe this practice). I was also told I need to download a third party app- RedDoor was mentioned though I am told there are more up to date or alternate third party apps that will allow me to update my iphone 3G beyond its normal peramiters? I am using a MacBook Pro and would need really clear precise, step by step instructions so as to avoid stuffing my iphone up alltogether! Can anyone help me with this?

I would strongly caution against this! Jailbreaking is not for the novice it can and will mess up your device. Additionally your device does not have the proper hardware for the latest version of iOS, this is why Apple choose not to support it!
