How do you back up your photos and videos to the cloud to free up space

Trying to free up space on 5c iphone. I know my pictures and videos are whats taking up the space, so I purchased 20GB more on the cloud. Still not enough to even download iOS 8.1.2

Yeah I am sure there are good options that I am missing. I know most people love the ease of sharing across devices but I dislike it and it creates a problem. In our family there are two iPhones and two iPads. I just recently got a new iPad for the kids and didn't want any pictures carried over from previous phones or iPads. I set up as new and didn't sync iTunes or anything. Just signed into my account. I just looked and there are a bunch of pictures on it. I am tired of doing things "apples" way. And then even if you want to try a different platform Apple makes it impossible with the iMessage mess! Just growing really tired of these little annoyes! So figured I would ask for advice!
