How can I find out what is taking up the rest of my device storage space?

I have a 16GB ipad Mini. Currently it is showing 12.1GB used and 658 MB free. I have cleared out photos etc and when I add the numeric value of all the items listed under storage I come to approx. 6GB and not the 12 as stated. How can I find out what is taking up the rest of the space?
