I switched carriers from AT&T to uverse and since then my apple tv will not operate properly. The first attempt kept telling me I needed a hdcp cable. After replacing the hdmi cable, it now continues to ask me to try again later.

I had the same problem when I first set up my Apple TV.
I found what worked, reset your modem and router.
Also unplug the Apple TV, and wait about a minute before powering everything up again.
And try a different HDMI port from the TV. That's pretty much what I did, and in my case, it worked.
    Good luck

If your picture isn't messed up, changing the HDMI port is entirely useless. It is like starting your car to see if that changes your network issues.

Resetting the modem/router are good ideas to try. Check your cables to see if you have any with loose connections/connectors going bad. Do you have the same problem with any other devices?

Changing the port isn't necessarily useless. Odd as it seems, it worked for me. The worse that can happen, is it doesn't work.
