Why are photos taken in landscape mode from my Blackberry appear in portrait mode on my iPad?

1) When I email photos taken in Landscape from my Blackberry to my iPad 2 they appear in portrait format. Very frustrating! Is there a way to prevent the iPad from rotating my photos? (They were not rotated when received on older iOS versions.)

2) When I try to rotate them in the new Apple Photos app they will not rotate beyond 45?. Is there some trick to get them to rotate 90??

There's some EXIF data issues between platforms... and both are pointing fingers at one another.
