I have been sending some photos with iPhone 6 iMessage and in the older messages with different people, the images disappeared....Do I have to save the photos on my phone for them to stay in older messages? I just updated to 8.1.2 and it's the exact same story.

Check the setting under messages.

Go into settings and change the option for how log to save messages and photos.

I keep everything for ever.. there is always a time I want to go back to a media file that was sent and I don't want it to be gone.

The messages are still there,only the attached photos on each of the messages are gone. It's set to keep messages forever.

The photos should still be there. When you're looking at the message, click details in the top right corner. It should bring up all pictures that have been shared with that contact/group chat.

I have a square image of stacked photos and when I click it is says substandard renderer jpg or something like that... Images are not there.

I'm having the same problem. My settings are fine. I've turned off and turn on iMessage. My messages are intact forever however my photos that have always been there are missing. I've tried all the fixes that everyone has suggested and nothing is working.
