Why isn't my iPhone 5s connect to my computer?

Can not Connect iPhone 5s to computer

I backed up my pictures onto my computer a few days ago, w/o itunes installed, and i computer recognized it right away. I wanted to put music on my phone so I downloaded itunes and now neither my computers device manager or itunes is recognizing it. I uninstalled itunes and reinstalled it, rebooted pc and phone, tried the apple mobile device stop/start, reset my phones privacy settings, nothing is working.
any help is appreciated.

Windows machine? Using a USB hub or direct to the computer? if using a hub...don't.
