I don't know which platform an friend has. The gift card is Google Play. If he has Apple can he buy something for his iPhone with that card?

If Google is selling it in their store... the Google Play card can be used on whatever is in their store...

Your friend would be able to to purchase content from the iOS version of Google Play music, books, and movie apps but that would be it.

Yes, you can use a Google gift card to purchase apps & games from the Google Play Store. You cannot use the Google Gift card to purchased apps and games from the iTunes & App Store to my knowledge.

To answer your question: Yes you can use Google gift cards on all Google services. But, however, you can't use Google gift cards on services other than Google's services.
