My ipad charges but the Charge leaks away in record time. Ipad is 3 years old. What is wrong?

I charge my ipad and then use it about 5 times BRIEFLY and then the screen suddenly goes black. there is 2970 no charge and I have to recharge it. This is happening all the time now. It was fine before.
