How do I close messages and move to another application?

Cannot close messages and move to another application.

When ever I use to double click on the round circle at the bottom of my iPhone 6 the application would close and I would return to the main screen. I have opened "Messages" to send a text but now it won't close and return to the main screen. I can only turn the iPhone on now, by pressing the button on the top right hand side and when it turns on it is still on messages and it no longer lets me put in my code to open the phone?

Do a reset. Hold the home button at the bottom and the power button on the right side at the same time until the Apple logo appears. Then let go.
