This has been bugging me for a while - why have and use the 'Contacts' app on iPhone when it looks exactly the same as the phone app? Or am I missing something? Is there a specific feature that makes it different from 'Phone' app

There's not much difference. I think Apple leaves them both because iOS is not just on phones. Plus, the contacts app also has a function for OS X on the Mac.

You can have two different contacts on each app.

I nest the Contacts app within another folder and forget it about. I only the Phone app to get to contacts, or Spotlight search.

You can get to your groups within contacts.

They are exactly the same. The contacts app has nothing extra that contacts through the phone app has. I keep the app in my "Unused Apps" folder. Some like to use it. I do use a 3rd party contacts app called iContacts+. It does offer some things extra.

So is there any point of contacts being on my home screen when I already have phone in my dock?

Can you not move the Contacts app to a folder and out of your sight?

That is interesting. I've been using the Contacts app for years and never really thought about just using the Phone app.

I've had the Contacts app in the "Unused" folder ever since I got my first iPhone. It just took up space. I access my contacts from the phone app just fine. I did use a 3rd party contacts app for a while for it's features the stock contacts lacked. But they have added the feature to the stock now, so I deleted the 3rd party app. The only feature it had left was it shows the date a contact was added. But I don't care about that.

I just can't see enough difference to justify a home screen spot when phone is always the first app in my dock, and I think 'would I miss the contacts app if it was to disappear?' And my answer is 'No'

I use the Contacts app because the Phone app is probably the least used app on my iPhone.

If your phone app is not used, how to you use your iPhone and what apps do you use (just curious if you don't mind me asking) and how do you contact people?

Talking on the phone is the least thing I do on my iPhone.

I use it WAY more for texting (including iMessaging), email, calendar, Twitter, Facebook, ESPN, banking, camera, Amazon, surfing the internet.

As new Apple stuffs it away in an Extras folder on the second home screen. Agree it's there for iPad / OSX compatibility.

Another thing I'm curious about : how many apps do you have on your iPhone? And which ones could you do without? I've started minimising my the amount of apps which I don't use

I have too many apps, and I could probably do without half of them. My problem is, I tell myself "I might need that application at some point."

A fellow "app hoarder" I do the same. I'm always downloading apps that I see pop up on sale even if I don't need them just in case.

I do that. And I have been collecting paid apps I get marked down and storing them in my purchased list for when I might need them.
