    The trash can symbol does not come up when the text is selected.

    I just went into messages. If I select a message I get a little trash can in the lower left corner of the screen. Touched it and the message was deleted.

    I have this problem sometimes.
    When I select a specific text message within a conversation to delete, the Trash Can icon doesn't alway appear.
    I have to close the app and then reopen it.
    This only happens on my iPhone 5S.
    Not a problem on my iPad Air.
