Why did my entire calendar disappear?

All the events on my iPad, from late 2011 until end of 2015, all disappeared. One day I entered a number of events -- and one would not stay, despite entering several times it wasn't visible. The next day -- every event on the calendar disappeared. It was not immediately following an upgrade. I did not have it synced at that point to an iCloud or other calendar - although I was in the Apple store and we checked both my gmail calendar & iCloud and it isn't there anyway. Please help -- my entire family of 7 people's lives is on that calendar.

I'm not sure if this will work but did try turning your calendar off and then back on?
