Why is the volume on video recordings very very low?

On iPad2, sound volume on video recordings is now very very low

I have been using my iPad2 to record oral histories with my aunt. Although I have used this device to record concerts with no problem, the audio is now exceptionally faint, such that I have to increase the gain a couple of orders of magnitude (with the resultant loud hiss) to hear anything.

Any ideas?

Have you tried a hard reset: hold down the power button and the home button at the same time until the Apple logo appears?

That fixes my static.
