Will a Verizon Iphone 5, with a slot for a SIM card, work on my AT&T plan?

I've read online that all Verizon iPhone 5's were released unlocked but I also read some conflicting stories so I'm not sure. The phone has a SIM card slot. Has anyone successfully used a Verizon IPhone 5 on AT&T's network? I'm getting this for my son and don't want a contract or have to do the Next plan for him, just bringing our own device. Let me know if you have personally done this and what your experience was. Thanks in advance.
