I am thinking about taking a Verizon 5s and using it on Consumer Cellular or Virgin Mobile. Other than changing to a new SIM card, is there anything else I need to do?

I know it won't work on Virgin because that's a CDMA carrier & runs on Sprints network. And AFAIK Consumer Cellular is GSM so you shouldn't have any issues. Just get the sim & activate

A Verizon 5s should work on any GSM provider by installing the provider's SIM and doing some programming that the new provider should be able to do for you or assist with.

Can you give me a little more detail on reprogramming. Both of these companies pretty much just send you the SIM card.

Whatever new provider you choose should have tech support available to get you up and running on their network.

I thought you could use the 5s on any network.

As said above a Verizon 5S can be used on any GSM network technically speaking. It cannot be used on any CDMA network except Verizon's. Some MVNO's restrict which devices can connect to their networks. Others do not. So you need to check first.
