The sound is intermittent & won't display the volume at times. Why?

My sound goes in and out and won't show the volume sometimes. Can you help?

• Have you tried rebooting it?
• Does this happen while listening to music, talking, watching videos or what?
• If the device runs iOS, what version is it running?
