    Why would they let you do that?

    That's like asking to trade an iPad 1 for an iPad Air 2.

    That's like asking if you could trade in a car and get the newer model for taxes only. They'll give you some credit for it but you'll still have to pay the value of the new product.

    Some stores will allow you to trade-up to a newer model, but that depends on the store, the device you're trying to get and the condition of the device you're trading in.

    Trade up for a certain amount of money, then you pay the balance of the new device. This guy is asking if he can trade his iPhone 4 for a 5C and pay nothing but taxes.
