Is it possible to use Lightroom in conjunction with the other apps?

I had LR3 and CS5 on my PC but would say that I am a novice at both programs. I would import my images into LR, crop and adjust them a bit there and then, export them to CS5 for the final edits. Hence my question about LR and the other programs mentioned in the article. I do not see myself ever getting too deep into photo manipulation. Basic edits plus minor enhancements is the norm. Looking for guidance on photo editing programs for my new iMac.
