Can I use the LED flash as the ONLY means of notification on a 5s?
I like to keep my phone silent and the front dark when I get a message, and only see a LED flash. Is this possible with IOS 8.1 and 5s?

Welcome to iMore! Try it and see. Turn off all other alerts and notifications and see how it goes. Note: I think the led flash alert only flashes once. I'm not sure though.
