Why isn't iTunes on my Mac being recognized on my new iPod?

Mac 10.5.8 Leopard and iPod 5th Gen

I have a Mac 10.5.8 Leopard (desktop) and I just got an iPod 5th generation. The iTunes on the Mac doesn't recognize my new iPod. What do I need to do, minimally, so I can sync my iTunes and iPhotos with the new device?

Which version of iTunes are you using? If not the latest version, download and install it, and then try again.
