Which should I buy - 8 GB non-Retina MBP or 8 GB MBA?

1st option is non retina MBP 8gb RAM and 1tb hard drive for USD 1134 and the second option is MBA 2014 8gb RAM and 128gb PCIe flash hard drive with 1tb external hdd which comes to approx 1034 USD plus 70 USD for the external hdd. Both the options cost the same approximately. I have used educational prices. My use of the macbook will be for basic browsing surfing, watching movies and basic photo editing or video making of a family trip.

For the usage you mentioned, I'd go with the lighter & newer MacBook Air. You'll be spending basically the same amount of money anyway. Still, whichever you choose, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Good luck with your decision and purchase...

Yeah, I'd go with the air too. Newer device, good specs, very lightweight and amazing battery life. It's the perfect laptop for everyday use and then a bit more.
